Changi prison in Singapore has a somewhat dubious place in Australian history. In 1942 it was a POW camp run by the Japanese. When the Japanese captured Singapore in 1942, they interned 50000 British, Dutch and Australian troops (and civilians) in Changi.
Now it should be noted that Changi was more than just a prison, it was a village.
Changi is and was much more than a prison.
It is both a village and a locality with an area of thousands and thousands of acres. What we, in Australia, might call a rural suburb or village.
When the island “fortress” of Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942 all the “captives” were sent to the area of Changi, which became a huge POW Camp.
In 1942 there were around 15000 Australians in Changi. Many were sent from there to work on the Burma Railway, at which 120,000 POW’s died. One for every sleeper laid. By mid 1943 only 2500 Australians remained imprisoned at Changi. In May of 1944
all the Allied prisoners in Changi, now including 5,000 Australians, were concentrated in the immediate environs of Changi Gaol, which up until this time had been used to detain civilian internees. In this area 11,700 prisoners were crammed into less than a quarter of a square kilometre, and this period underlies Changi’s place in popular memory. Rations were cut, camp life was increasingly restricted, and in July the authority of Allied senior officers over their troops was revoked
Over the years stories of Japanese atrocities too horrific to imagine (and according to many official websites, hard to prove) have sprung up about the treatment of Australian POW’s at Changi.
So why am I telling you all this?
Because of the disgusting, sickening, disgraceful, despicable downright fucking atrocious comments by some bastard called Robert Richter, QC.
The soldiers interned at Changi were fighting for their nation, they were giving their lives, they were sacrificing their very existence to protect Australia from Japanese invasion.
So how does that compare with the death of one miserable low life drug smuggler at Changi prison yesterday? Lets ask Robert Richter, QC.
“Changi is a place that resonates in the Australian psyche … we remember Changi for the unspeakable horrors that happened there under Japanese occupation,” Mr Richter told the crowd.
“But what happened at Changi this morning is more shameful and worse.”
Singapore killing one drug smuggler is worse. Worse than the “unspeakable horrors” inflicted by the Japanese.
I am speechless beyond words. Robert Richter, QC you are filth. I hope that one day you stumble across this post, I hope that you realize that not everyone glorifies a low life drug smuggler, not everyone thinks his death is “more shameful and worse” than the death of Australian soldiers fighting for their nation. I guess because you hang out and work with filth for a living, you might not know this. I do not have the words in my vocabulary to describe the utter contempt I hold you in Robert Richter. God help me if I am ever in need of a QC to defend me. I swear to the almighty I would rather eat dog shit on toast than employ the services of a maggot like you.
