Ape or artist?

Posted by: Patrick Carroll   in Patrick Carroll

I thought that I would feature a couple of my old posts…

I was inspired to do this by KAREN at Eastern Right Blog because of her latest post called “This is why abstract expressionism isn’t really art”

Make sure you go read that and then stroll on back and read this…

Hello there folks.

This is the first of a two part series and let’s hope that it provides a powerful insight into your observation skills, not to mention your prowess and talent at being an art critic…

Ape or Artist works like this:

I will present a series of paintings for your scrutiny, perusal and viewing pleasure. Amongst this talented array of classics will be a painting done by a monkey.

Now I will say this… The first person to correctly identify which is the monkey’s painting and also (for bonus points) which type of monkey painted it (baboon–spider monkey–chimp etc) will win!

Thankyou to Patrick for his piece on “The Scribbler” and also David Letterman for inspiring this!

Now, let’s get on with the paintings….good luck…

ONE…

TWO…

THREE…

FOUR…

FIVE…

SIX…

SEVEN…

EIGHT…

Thanks so much for the linkage, Patrick… I came across this as I was having my morning coffee at oh dark thirty, and as bad art is a bugaboo of mine…

Seven is the ape’s or rather chimp. It has to be.

Visited Karen’s blog and quite frankly the parents should have kept that kid’s “art” to themselves.

Interesting post. As an abstract expressionist artist I’m very familiar with the point of view you share with others. There are two types of people, those who appreciate abstract and those that don’t. For those who do, the eternal question is, what is good abstract and what isn’t. Personally I judge each work on whether it is pleasing to me or not. A lot of abstract work isn’t very pleasant to look at but still there is a wide audience who praise such work. You can check for yourself on Red Bubble. I do admire those artists who have the technical skill to render images that a virtually the equivalent of a photo, sometimes you can’t even tell which is which. I’m guessing that you would probably judge such work as good art. So here’s my question to you, do you consider Impressionist art such as Monet as rubbish? The general public in his day certainly did. And so did art establishment. What about Post Impressionism such as Vincent Van Gogh. Never sold a painting in his lifetime poor bugger. Or maybe you draw the line at Picasso?
#1 and #7 look like they were painted by a monkey.

I like Monet and Van Gogh but you can leave me out of Picasso, his stuff sucks.

And sorry Lexcen, it’s not one or seven!

I’m not down with abstract art. I like Picasso’s work because he was an excellent artist who went abstract for whatever reason. This child couldn’t draw anything if her life depended on it. It’s like putting a paint brush on an elephant’s trunk and gushing over the result.
